HOW MIx MAKES AN IMPACT
We work with mission-driven organizations to help realize their goals.
MIx connects problem owners, such as mission-driven organizations, with capability providers, which are often in the form of dual-use ventures. We also communicate the broader dual-use context and inspire the MIT community to participate in our mission-driven ecosystem.
We accelerate dual-use companies so that they can make their impact on global society.
We accelerate and nurture ventures that will make an impact on these global challenges, and we also seek to advance both the science and practice of dual-use innovation for the benefit of society through the identification of dual-use venture pathways.
We connect and expand the MIx community to explore cross-disciplinary ideas.
We collaborate with mission-driven organizations to help solve the world’s challenges through research and education. MIx deploys a variety of mission innovation programs to support these aims, including grants and partnerships, fellowships, sponsored research, and experiential learning activities.

WHAT ARE MISSION-DRIVEN ORGANIZATIONS?
Mission-driven organizations (MDOs) are problem owners. MDOs spend resources for the benefit of solving a challenge rather than for economic return. If an MDO is able to solve a challenge, it is a success, regardless of the expense of resources. In contrast, organizations which do not qualify as MDOs are incentivized by profit, return or stock price. The customer is often not the funding source in an MdO. While every organization may state they have a mission statement, and therefore they have a mission, true MDOs care solely about the impact they are able to provide. Risk is calculated in regard to mission success, not organizational success.
WHAT ARE DUAL-USE VENTURES?
Dual-use Ventures (DuV) are created around a technology or capability that addresses a problem held by an MDO. They are supported by both the public and private sectors to create new solutions to mission problems, while ultimately striving to achieve commercial success.
